About Gaylord
With a unique location on the 45th parallel, the Alpine Village of Gaylord is truly Northern Michigan's heart. Gaylord's altitude, which is 1350 feet, is higher than any other community in the State of Michigan and provides us with stunning views year round.
Visitors to the area can take advantage of a variety of local attractions, picturesque scenery and the charming downtown shopping district. Shoppers will enjoy browsing through the unique stores clustered along Main Street while appreciating the small-town atmosphere of this growing community. Our town proudly presents many cultural events throughout the year, from the Alpenfest festival in the summer, to plays at a number of venues.
Gaylord is home to the largest collection of four-star golf courses as rated by Golf Digest in the country on a per capita basis. 27 of our 37 golf courses within a 25 mile radius of Hawks Landing earn this ranking. With a Gaylord Golf Mecca pass, its easy and economical to play many of these courses. All the locals know that the best golf package in the area is merely being a Gaylord resident surrounded by so many great golf courses.
Gaylord is within 30 minutes of six world-class rivers; the Sturgeon River
starts less than a mile from Hawks Landing. Pigeon River Country
provides an extremely wild outdoors experience for hikers, bikers,
hunters, canoers, kayakers, fisherman, and morel mushroom hunters.
The
Sturgeon, Pigeon, and Black Rivers all run through the Pigeon River
State Forest. The largest wild elk herd east of
the Mississippi lives within the Pigeon River Country, and are easily viewable by hikers and and by auto.
Hawks Landing's main road, "Goshawk" Circle, is named after a year-round resident of the area.
Gaylord is the center of Northern Michigan Snowmobiling, with races held through-out the season. We also have miles of groomed trails that extend well beyond the county line in all directions providing countless hours of trail-riding without having to backtrack. Gaylord is in the heart of the snowbelt of northwestern Michigan and has plenty of scenic vistas that make snowmobiling in our area a breathtaking experience. Hawks Landing is also within 5 miles of two ski resorts and within 10 miles of four groomed cross-country ski trails. River Country provides a near infinite amount of snowshoe country to explore.
